What I Do

So what is dramaturgy, exactly? Dramaturgy is one of the hardest theater jobs to define, and no two dramaturgs define it in the exactly same way. In general, however, there are two kinds of commonly recognized dramaturgy - classical dramaturgy (a research-focused approach to new productions of older plays) and new play dramaturgy, which is my corner of the sandbox.

A new play dramaturg is a key collaborator in the development of a new play or musical, working closely with the playwright to help the new work become the best possible version of itself. As a playwright finds their way through a new play—from the germ of an idea to an outline to a first draft to a million more drafts to opening night—a dramaturg is there every step of the way, asking questions, making observations, helping the playwright stay true to the goals of the piece. During rehearsals, the dramaturg works with the entire creative team as decisions are made, offering another pair of eyes on what the team is building.

I believe a dramaturg is a cheerleader, a co-conspirator, a researcher, a sparring partner, a coach, a therapist and an eager audience member all rolled into one.

My personal approach to dramaturgy is hands-on, joyful and rigorous. I will work closely with you as you’re trying to get your new play or musical to the next step of its development. I strongly believe that the playwright is the driver of the artistic process. I strive to make your ideas, your characters and your story shine, not my personal opinion of what your play should be.

Services I provide include script analysis & feedback, consultation on creative team building, deep-dive research, short-term new play development (for readings/workshops) and long-term production dramaturgy (for full productions of new or existing dramatic work).
